Visual and Verse

Visual and Verse was one of my many civic projects that I conceived of for Greenville, South Carolina for my Poet Laureate Fellowship 2023 Grant that I received through The Academy of American Poets. It was my honor to partner with the Metropolitan Arts Council to bring this project to fruition. It was an Ekphrastic project. Ekphrastic poetry is derived from an ancient poetry practice of poets writing to another art form, such as dance, photography, music, or visual arts. In this project, we paired 14 poets with 14 visual artists. The visual artists were asked to paint, sculpt, or make a piece related to a sense of place. They submitted works depicting landscapes, objects, or portraits that tell a story about the past, present, or future. Then, we paired each artwork with a poet. They were asked to respond in verse.
